It rained on our train from Sirmione to Thun, our homebase in Switzerland. Despite the rain, traveling in a window seat on a train through the Italian, Austrian and Swiss Alps was truly an unforgettable experience! After a very wet walk to our VRBO, we grabbed some dinner and rested up before a busy week of touring.
Our first morning in Switzerland was overcast with rain predicted, but we ventured out anyway. We sure are glad because the rain let up and there were even glimpses of blue sky as we took a funicular up to the top of Harder Kulm, a mountain overlooking Interlaken. The ride is STEEP, but the panoramic views from the top are incredible: Lake Brienz, Interlaken and Lake Thun:
After our descent back down the mountain, we walked over to the main part of Interlaken and then took the train to Brienz, which sits at the other end of the lake. Brienz is the quintessential Swiss town, known for its word carving and craftsmanship.
From there we walked along the lake and stopped to explore some nearby hamlets with their gorgeous scenery and quaint churches.
While waiting for our ride home, we spotted Swiss fighter jets scrambling up and down the lake, and then watched the sun break through stormy clouds across the water. So dramatic and beautiful!
