The Fourth of July - Downeast Style

The charming little fishing village of Cutler (approx. 15 miles up the coast) may be small, but it's big in its spirit of Independence - especially around the 4th.  This past Monday we joined a group of friends there to celebrate Downeast style.  Although we missed the parade, the kids managed to snag a coveted spot on one of the lobster boats for the annual races.
Mike Ferguson's boat, the "Tornado," came in 3rd, 2nd and then 1st in the races.  The kids were thrilled!
Not seasick in the least, the kids enjoyed a nice lunch and free popcorn in town.  They also participated in the gum chewing/bubble blowing and coke bottle drinking games.  Thane rode a train ride around town, while Annabel had her face painted.

We ended the day with a barbeque with our neighbors, and then watched the fireworks on a hill overlooking the picturesque Machias River.  Happy 4th!
